Fifth Avenue at 51st Street in 1900
This image of Fifth Avenue at 51st Street is remarkable because there are no cars to be found on the street. This photo was taken in 1900; 30 years later, John D. Rockefeller Jr. would build Rockefeller Center here, a cluster of buildings that houses Radio City Music Hall and the GE Building, where NBC shot shows like “Late Night with David Letterman” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” The New York City subway system would open just four years after this image was taken.
